Acquired Communication and Swallowing Difficulties

Acquired Difficulties

Adults can develop communication or swallowing difficulties for many different reasons. These changes are often described as acquired difficulties, meaning they have developed after a period of typical functioning rather than being present from childhood.

Acquired difficulties may happen suddenly, such as after a stroke or head injury, or they may develop more gradually as part of a neurological condition. They can affect speech, language, voice, cognition, eating, drinking and swallowing, and they can have a significant impact on independence, confidence and quality of life.

At Adult Conversations, support is tailored to the individual and based on their specific strengths, difficulties and goals.

Assessment and therapy may include advice and strategies, bespoke exercises and therapy programmes, technology and apps, and Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) where appropriate. Therapy is always designed to be practical, personalised and relevant to everyday life.

Conditions wich may lead to acquired difficulties:

  • Stroke
  • Brain injury
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Motor neurone disease
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Dementia
  • Brain tumours or neurosurgery
  • Other neurological or medical conditions
