Facial Rehabilitation for Adults

Facial weakness can affect expression, speech clarity, lip seal, saliva management, confidence and day-to-day communication. Facial rehabilitation is offered as part of a wider neurorehabilitation approach, with therapy tailored to the person rather than delivered as a one-size-fits-all programme.

Facial rehab can help with:

  • Facial weakness after stroke / other condition
  • Facial palsy or facial nerve involvement
  • Reduced lip closure affecting speech, saliva control or eating and drinking
  • Changes in facial symmetry, movement or coordination
  • Reduced confidence

The aim of treatment is to improve:

  • Facial movement awareness and control
  • Symmetry and accuracy of movement
  • Lip seal and oral containment
  • Eating, drinking, chewing and swallowing where indicated
  • Speech-related facial movement
  • Home practice provision with clear guidance and review

Facial Dynamics

Where appropriate, therapy can be supported through Facial Dynamics by Life Analytics, a platform designed for remote facial rehabilitation.

This is used to assign routines, review progress and analyse movement data captured through a standard smartphone or tablet.

Ampcare

Facial rehabilitation may sometimes sit alongside other rehabilitation work, including swallowing therapy. Where clinically appropriate, this can include treatment approaches such as Ampcare. Ampcare combines neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) with rehabilitative exercises.

Complex Difficulties

Some people present with overlapping issues affecting facial movement, oral control, saliva management, speech and swallowing. Where relevant, assessment and treatment planning can take account of that wider picture.

Our Experience

Ampcare and Facial Dynamics are tools that may support rehabilitation.

They can help provide structure, feedback, monitoring and greater opportunity for practice within therapy.

More broadly, the evidence base for facial rehabilitation is still developing, and this remains an area of ongoing and emerging research. Outcomes can vary depending on the cause, severity, timing and the individual’s wider rehabilitation needs.

For that reason, therapy is approached in a measured and transparent way, using appropriate tools to support rehabilitation without overpromising results.

If you would like to ask about assessment or treatment, please get in touch. We can advise whether facial rehabilitation is likely to be appropriate, and whether technology-supported options such as Facial Dynamics and Ampcare may be relevant within your therapy plan.
